Since January, the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway’s first section has been opened for public traffic. And according to a recent report, in the next few months, the motorway will be fully opened, as its construction is in the final stages. It would connect Sialkot and Lahore through eastern Punjab—reducing travel time between the two cities to just 41 minutes.
Lahore Sialkot Motorway: Details And Overview
The operating segment of 22 kilometers begins from Kala Shah Kaku to Road Muridke-Narowal, as per the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). And the remaining 69 kilometers will be completed in the coming months. In a statement ISPR said the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) is working on the 91-kilometer long motorway. ISPR had hoped that the Lahore-Sialkot motorway would reduce the rush on GT Road and M2.
History Behind Lahore Sialkot Motorway
The SLM was conceived in 2006 by former Punjab’s chief minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, and its foundation stone was laid in 2007 by former Pakistani president, General Pervez Musharraf, but no actual work was done. According to the original plan, the SLM would have been opened to the public in 2010 but due to non-availability of funds the Punjab government shelved the scheme. Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, reordered the SLM construction.
The National Highway Authority (NHA) has only two shortlisted firms— Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and a foreign company to conduct this mission. This road would uplift the city of Sialkot and the rural hinterlands around it. Sialkot Motorway is the first section of theM-11 that passes from Lahore to Islamabad parallel to M-2. Development will take place in the next phase of M-11 Sambrial (Sialkot) To Kharian (Gujrat), and final phase will be Kharian (Gujrat) to Rawat (Rawalpindi Ring Road).
Route To And From Lahore Sialkot Motorway
This motorway is four-lane, with nine interchanges, eight flyovers, twenty bridges and 18 underground passes. In addition to the project 3 industrial zones and 2 universities would be built. It is connected via Lahore link road near Kala Shah Kaku to the M2 and N5. The route runs parallel to the GT road which passes east of Kamoki, Gujranwala, Daska and ends at Sambrial.
Divisions Of Lahore Sialkot Motorway
The Lahore-Sialkot Motorway was split into four parts, for construction purposes. The entire project is being operated under the Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) system by Frontier Works Organization (FWO). The Lahore-Sialkot motorway connects with the GT Road and the M2 motorway via Lahore Link Road near Kala Shah Kaku. This motorway will also have 31 bridges, 13 subways, 23 underpasses, 254 culverts, and 33 cattle creep.

The interchange between the Kala Shah Kaku will carry the commuters to theM-2 Lahore-Islamabad motorway.
